THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MIDDLE EASTERN AND NORTH AFRICAN POPULAR CULTURE

The English Department of the University of Carthage, Tunis, and the Association for the Study of Middle Eastern and North African Popular Culture (ASMENAPC) propose to organize the Second International Conference on Middle Eastern and North African Popular Culture, 2-7 April 2002 in Hammamet, Tunisia. The first conference in the series was held at Magdalen College, Oxford, in September 2000.

Papers are welcome on any of the following topics, as they relate to any cultural or linguistic grouping within the area:

- Oral Poetry performed or written down in the vernacular
- Artistic prose in the vernacular
- Tribal oral narratives
- Folk or traditional stories
- Folk or traditional songs
- Drama and other forms of performance in the vernacular (including television, radio and film)
- Oral literature today

Contributions from dialectologists, ethnographers, and literary historians are all welcome.

All interested persons are invited to submit a 150 word-abstract to the address below, stating in which of the proposed panels they think their paper would best fit, no later than October 31st 2001.

The principal languages of the conference will be Arabic, French and English. The conference will be held at the International Cultural Centre in Hammamet, 50 km from Tunis. Accommodation: Participants (unless they wish otherwise ) will be accommodated in modest, cheap single and double rooms at the Cultural Centre or at the Continental Hotel next door. Details of the conference accommodation and booking forms will be sent to interested parties later. No advance payment will be required.
